The Central Regional Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), National Insurance Commission (NIC), the National Road Safety Authority, the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) together with other insurance companies have as part of its strategic measures put in place to restrain uninsured and unlicensed vehicles from plying various roads within the region as Christmas inch near, have as one unit embarked on a vigorous road inspection on such vehicles.
Commenced some days back, the exercise which seizes to curb the long-standing menace of moving cars with uninsured or expired insurance covers have had a repeat of its series carried out on Wednesday 16th November, 2022 at Nkanfoa on the Cape Coast-Accra highway.
The unawares inspection executed had respective personalities particularly commercial drivers finding themselves caught in the web of the action, including the vehicle of Assin Owirenkyiman Traditional Area paramount chief, Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI equally falling prey to the exercise.
The inspection which took-off last week in Mankessim, a suburb of the Mfantseman municipality of the region on Wednesday evenly had drivers with wrongful fixing of their car's number plates removed and lashed with an on-the-spot fine of GH¢60 by the DVLA officials before handing the said number plate over to these driver with an issued directive to these drivers to drive to the DVLA's Cape Coast office for a proper fixing of it.
In an interview to Accra-UK based Rainbow Radio reporter Eric Annan, the NIC's Central Regional boss Madam Nicholina Naa Yeye Aduamuah advised passenger to carefully take into consideration the insurance of commercial vehicles they board entering into the Christmas festivity to validate and confirm whether such cars are duly insured by simply dialing their validation short code (*920*57#) using any type of phone at all in ascertaining before boarding a vehicle to their respective destinations.
Mr. Lawrence Adom, the Central Regional DVLA Manager in an engagement with Rainbow News highlighted their carried out exercise to purposely bother on road safety. Adding that several factors including overspeeding, the use of unauthorized driver's license among others all contribute to road accident in times like this, approaching Christmas. Hence the need for his outfit together with these stakeholders to come out and verify for themselves whether these drivers are on the right track with no expired road worthy or driver's license. As he attributed reasons behind insurance companies' unavailability of paying motors claims in times of car crash to such uncertainties.
Meanwhile, a follow-up of the exercise is said to come off on Friday 18th November.
