Benya FM Vandalism: Court Grant Suspects A Bail Of GH¢30,000 With Two Sureties Each


The Cape Coast Circuit Court 'B' has on Friday, May 20,2022 granted a bail of GH¢30,000 with two sureties each to the three arrested suspects who are believed to be behind the recent vandalism and brutal assault on both Elmina based radio station Benya FM and it's employee presenter Osofo Blessing in a case presided over by Her Lordship Dorinda Smith Arthur.

The unfortunate brutal incident which stole many newspaper headlines in Ghana and received many media bashes occured on Tuesday, May 17 at the station's work premise whiles on-air, having been discussing on the non-availability of premix fuel to fisherfolks within the City [Elmina which is known to be a fishing hub] and how this fuel usually ends up in the hands of people known not to be fishermen to sell to these ordinary fishermen who badly relies on the fuel for their daily fishery activities on a relatively higher price.

The three accused persons; Isaac Opare Aikins, aged 25, popularly known as 'Gyekye' was recorded by the court to be a Watchman. Michelle Asabre, aged 25, is a Premix Fuel Attendant and Anthony Eshun, aged 32, affectionately called 'Komfo' all pleaded not guilty before the court with all six (6) charges the court levelled against them which includes unlawful entry, causing damage, stealing and assault.

Counsel for the accused suspects, Lawyer Francis Buah Essilfie who before the court necessitated the bail of his clients explained to AfricaNewsArenaGH that the court upon hailing to his plea further requested of his clients to make sure to provide in their two sureties given them a government worker who earns a monthly net of not less than GH¢2,000. 

Meanwhile, board member of Benya FM, Mr. James Nunoo who on behave of his company spoke to AfricaNewsArenaGh's Eric Annan after the court's first hearing of his outfit's case expressed his profound delight as to how the proceedings went, and affirmed his surest believe that at the end of the trial, victory would be theirs to serve as a deterrent to those who are fond of attacking Journalists.

The case has however been adjourned to the 28th of June, 2022.
