Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO) II, Samuel Nii Lamptey Quaye of the Ghana National Fire Service's (GNFS) Central Region divisional headquarters (Cape Coast) has vehemently cautioned citizenry on the purchasing of refurbished Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, narrating it's usually prone to leakages which has since the commencement of the year caused series of mayhem to some ignorant victims within the region, displacing a number of them along the line.
The GNFS through it's recent public service sensitization across the country on fire prevention has however impelled the masses to as a sense of urgency refrain from the usage of old and leaking gas cylinders either for cooking or for a domestic activity of any sort, as it happens to be a major contributing factor to Ghana's recent numerous fire outbreaks recorded within this year.
Speaking exclusively in an interview to Accra-UK based Rainbow Radio reporter Eric Annan, ADO II Nii Lamptey Quaye carefully highlighted the dangers a leaking gas cylinder poses to the ordinary individual, as he squeezed out time to enlighten the general public on how to detect whether one's gas cylinder is suffering from leakages and the sole cause to such widely experienced recent situations.
"The Central Region talk of gas related fires as we speak now has only within this year recorded a number of seven (7) different cases, having had victims from two of these cases sustained various degrees of injury, with one person dying along the line."
Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders"These gas fires per investigations are mostly necessitated by the purchasing of old but galvanized gas cylinders which usually due to its weird and rusty state having been coated with spray, mostly propels it to develop various kind of faults, which leads to fire outbreaks.
"Also there's this black rubber casing at the edge of the cylinder which as time goes by gets deteriorated, causing the enclosed gas in the cylinder to leak, hence demands a periodical check and repairs," he noted.
On why the country as at now is experiencing some level of rainfall but is still recording fire outbreaks explained;
"Due to the fact that this season we're currently experiencing suits our farmers with regards to their plantations, propels them to clear off weeds from their lands to usher themselves in for sowing. Which ideally is advisable for them to creat a vacuum where such weeds will be burnt who doesn't do so but rather randomly lights up fires on these weeds, which because it's not properly handled consequently ends up destroying people's hard earn properties, hence making most of our recorded fire outbreaks during raining season comes from bush fires."
"Quiet apart from that, there are various degrees of fire outbreaks which are equally contributing to our recently recorded fire outbreaks which includes; domestic fires, industrial, electrical cable failure and vehicular fires," the young but highly resourceful fire officer said in conclusion.
Countless number of people within the Central Region and beyond has over the years lost their life toiled multi-million properties to non other than fire guts, hence a general caution to every individual to be extra wary of fire related disasters.
