Unlike the Ex-President Mahama/NDC ere where Ghanaians witnessed humongous electricity and water tariffs increment coupled with 'dumsor', it is not so under President Nana Addo/ NPP.
Electricity Tariff increment under NDC from 2012-2016 (4yrs) cumulatively was 149% but our lights was not stable upon paying this huge sum of money.
Today electricity Tariff increment under NPP from 2017 to 2022 cumulatively is 39% and our lights is stable.
Below is the break down:
Under Ex President John Mahama/NDC
2012: no increment
2013: 46% increment
2014: 50% increment
2015: 53% increment
2016: no increment
Under President Nana Addo/NPP.
2017: no increment
2018: 21% (average) reduction
2019: 11% increment
2020: no increment
2021: no increment
2022: 28% increment.
In this difficult times when governments and citizens globally are crying out due to the negative impact of COVID-19 and Russia-Ukraine war on every economy, no one will be happy about tax or tariffs increment. On the other side of the coin, most governments are putting measures in place to bring back their economy to life by introducing new taxes, increasing taxes, cutting down expenditure among others.
This reminds me of one of the most loved quote around the world when Covid-19 was at it's peak. "We know how to bring the economy back to life. What we do no know is how to bring people back to life.” - President Nana Akufo-Addo. Ghanaians should have hope in this Akufo-Addo’s/NPP government. This one too shall pass.
