The National Association of Local Authority of Ghana (NALAG) on it's nationwide training of women in local leadership has on Thursday, 11th August, 2022 at the Samrite Hotel (Cape Coast) enlightened Assemblywomen within the Central Region on women empowerment and gender equality.
The workshop which is aimed at encouraging women within the country ascertain higher heights in decision-making levels like politics and public life was heavily attended by the few Assemblywomen the Central Region is blessed with, out of the region's male dominated Assembly Members.
The association (NALAG) through its nationwide women empowerment program having toured almost all 16 Regions of the country has adopted the slogan '1M 1F', which translates 'One Male One Female' at all decision-making levels as aforementioned.
Voicing out his address at the one day sensitization program, Dr. Daniel Appiah, Facilitator to NALAG who also double as a lecturer at the University of Ghana (Lagon) with the Department of Public Administration vehemently spilled out to these Assemblywomen saying, gender equality in the everyday life especially to couples 'only' comes in on the grounds of idea sharing which enhances economic growth.
He added that Ghana judging from its records as a country should've hold women in high esteem by dishing out major positions and opportunities to them having massively benefited both politically and socially from the selfless contributions made by them, as the country's first constitution as a republic was forcefully facilitated by women together with it's national flag which was designed by non other but a woman named Madam Theodosia Okoh.
The lecturer in his submission further declared that a reliable research conducted by the Transparency Website reveals that most developed and well performing countries across the globe are majorly handled by women, hence the need to empower them ascend positions usually offered men.
Speaking after the program to Rainbow Radio's Eric Annan, Dr. Daniel Appiah relayed the need to involve women in decision-making within our Assemblies as he revealed the United Nations (UN) as part of its agenda on women empowerment and gender equality through its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.5. has allocated funds (money) to be given to District Assemblies which has the involvement of women at heart in addition to their common fund.
Madam Gladys Otae Addo Osei, NALAG Women's Representative Rep who chaired the highly impactful program and then also doubles as the Assemblywomen to the Obgojo Adenta Electoral Area took the opportunity to conscientize women who aspire the feet of greatness and those that desire to enter into politics to gather courage not to heed to any negative remarks made against such women.
Some of these Assemblywomen when made to speak after the program expressed their excitement as they pointed out the workshop to be extremely impactful.
Meanwhile a survey done on the country's gender superiority in some political sectors depict Ghana's Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE's) to have a male dominated figure of 223 appointees (85%) compared to female's 38 appointees (15%). Assembly Members: males - 8275 (91%) females - 837 (9%).
