The final year students of Komenda Senior High Technical School (Komenstec) have been advised not to engage in any social media activity that would tarnish their (students) images and that of the school.
According to Mr Isaac Quayson, an old student of the school and the Assembly Member for Ayensudo Electoral Area who made the call said, the rate at which most youth had been misusing social media by going naked and tarnishing their images was worrying.
“Please don't go and be a victim upon all this talk because it will be very sad to see any of you on television with a tag that, this young man or woman, a former student of Komenda Secondary Technical School has indulged in that bad act. In fact, if that thing happens will hurt us [the school] and will create a very bad reflection of the school so please make good use of the social media."
“As a woman, and a young one for that matter, you need to dress decently,” the former head boy of the school pleaded and added that, there was another thing called 'sextortion' which was commonly going on. He explained that, young men either record or demand nude pictures and videos of their girlfriends and later demand a ransom from them failure of which they threaten to send the nudes out.
Mr Isaac Quayson who doubles as a professional teacher made the call at the Komenstec Old Students' Union (KOSU)'s fourth Annual Seminar organized for the final year students of the school.
The seminar, themed, “Equipping the finalists for the world of work: Experiences of the old students in the world of work,” brought together old students of the school who were in the various fields of work such as teaching, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, media, heads of public sectors and agencies and entrepreneurs to share their experiences and encouraged the finalists.
Mr Cosmos Kweku Bassaw, who completed in 1994 and now an IT specialist and entrepreneur, advised those whose parents could not afford to help them to continue their education from the Senior High Level to prioritize and venture into Vocational Skills Training such as dressmaking, carpentry, hairdressing etc.
On his part, the main speaker, Mr Benjamin Dzantor, who was with the 1997 batch, appealed to the students to take advantage of the current modern and developed facilities in the school to study hard to pass their pending examination.
According to him, the school virtually had nothing during their time. He recounted situation where some of them had to walk 10 to 20kilometres distance to and from school everyday because the school had neither hostel facility nor bus to host/convey them on campus.
“My brothers and sisters, amidst all these aforementioned challenges, we were able to make it and here I'm teaching at the UCC College of Distance Education [UCC CoDE] today so like I've been saying, you have no reason to fail; marry your books, stick to them in order to pass and pass ones,” the Progressive People's Party KEEA constituency Chairman charged the finalists and cautioned them not to rely on foreign materials.
Ebenezer Ackon, the President of the Union, outlined some of the projects the Union has done for the school aside the annual seminars.
He revealed that union's current plan was to build a ultra modern and fully furnished sick bay for the school.
He therefore called on all past students of Komenstec to come on board and also charged the finalists not to neglect the union after completion.
