Telecommunication Company, MTN Ghana has paid a courtesy call on the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), Dr. Stephen Laryeh and the management of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit to inspect the Company's blood bank facility, which was handed over to the hospital previous years ago and the need to strengthen its blood supply system and its sustainability.
The Senior Manager for South-West business, Mr Prince Owusu Nyarkoh who led the Foundation said, the colorful visit forms part of their focus to consider the Foundation's impact on the society more than just profits.
According to him, the foundation will leave a long lasting legacy for their blood donation exercises over the years and are more excited since it is making a significant contribution to the health needs of the people in the country.
He stressed that, the significance of blood in healthcare delivery especially in emergency cases and in cases of Obstetric hemorrhage, cannot be overlooked.
"MTN Foundation instituted an annual blood donation exercise which has over the years yielded over thousands pints of blood, because of the need."
"We are here to see if the blood bank facility is in good shape and how helpful it has been to the hospital, and to collect any other feedback which will enable the Foundation know its next plan of action in respect of blood supply system and its sustainability which is one of our core mandate."
The acting Chief Executive Officer for the hospital, Dr. Stephen Laryeh welcomed them with great pleasure and emphasized the benefits the hospital's blood bank has contributed to health delivery at the hospital.
He disclosed that, the facility has helped in providing a convenient place for donors, availability of blood for emergencies and maternities as well which he said, consume the highest amount of blood at the hospital.
"Since the facility came, l can say the maternal mortality due to blood issues has reduced by about twenty percent (20%).
He stressed that, hemorrhage which was at first the topmost cause of death of maternal mortality has reduced and is looking at partnering further with MTN foundation to see if they could get fascination a bit where they could fascinate blood into various components.
"...because fresh frozen plasma which is a component of a blood is very much used to treat hypertensive diseases in pregnancy."
Dr Laryeh revealed that, the facility has really helped in terms of healthcare delivery and is getting more donors coming, as compared to its previous situation.
He then appealed to every individual to help the facility get enough blood at the hospital to achieve its purpose by donating to save lives.
