Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is seriously considering switching his national allegiance to play for Ghana after the country's remarkable qualification to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Ghana delivered a fourth World Cup berth after overcoming continental rivals Nigeria.
The Black Stars qualified on the away goal rule after drawing 1-1 against the Super Eagles at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Ghana's qualification has put a lot of spin in the media about the possibility of Callum Hudosn-Odoi switching allegiance to play for his country of his Ghanaian father.
Odoi has not played for England youth team for two years and recently rejected a call-up into the England U21 team to fuel speculation about his international future.
Though he has made three appearances for the Three Lions, the Chelsea winger is still eligible to switch to play for Ghana.
The 21-year-old will only be available for the Black Stars if they qualify for the 2022 World Cup to be staged in Qatar, according to a reports.
The 2021 UEFA Champions League winner has agreed to ditch England and represent the country of his parents.
Hudson-Odoi when asked about switching nationality in a recent interview with the Evening Standard said,
“I don’t know. At the end of the day, we will wait until that time comes".
The new FIFA rules mean that it is possible for Hudson-Odoi, to switch international allegiance despite two of his three caps coming in competitive fixtures.
Hudson-Odoi last played in England’s 5-0 Euro 2020 qualifier win over Czech Republic at Wembley in March, 2019, and then made his full debut three days later against Montenegro.
He has represented England at various youth levels from the Under 16’s.
Hudson-Odoi was part of the England U-17 team that won the 2017 FIFA World Cup in India.
Ghana will know its group opponents for the group stage on friday when the draw is held in Doha, Qatar.
The Black Stars are among the lowly-seeded teams after being placed in Pot 4.
This means the team cannot avoid heavyweights like Argentina, Brazil and France as well as 2014 group stage opponent Germany amongst many other stellar nations.
