The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in collaboration with the Ghana Fire Service (GFS) and National Ambulance Service (NAS) have schooled drivers in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central region on the Stay Alive Campaign themed: 'Be Smart And Be Alert' to reduce the incidence of road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths.
According to them, it could be achieved through promotion, implementation and enforcement of standards, development and coordination of road safety-related policies.
Mr. David Kwabena Frimpong, the National Road Safety Authority Regional Manager in charge of Planning and Programmes revealed that, the Central region has been ranked 4th in the first quarter of the year 2022 as 59 deaths have been recorded through road traffic crashes.
He, therefore, urged the passengers to speak up politely as he called on drivers to be defensive and tolerant on road to minimize the deaths rate in the region.
The Regional Safety Officer for the Ghana Fire Service, DOIII Mustapha Nyarko Hammah speaking on the postcrash sensitization in an interview with to AfricaNewsArenaGh's Paa Solo Savvy said, "instead of the eyewitnesses to call Ghana Fire Service or the Ambulance Service to the accident scene to save lives and property, they would rather be taking actualities and uploading it on the social media and it has been one of the major problems we often encounter."
He noted that, the general public should desist from the act and pleaded to always report any incident to the appropriate quarters as soon as possible with the needful information. He also appetite drivers to have a fire extinguisher in their vehicles to help resolve some incidences before it becomes difficult to control.
Reaching the Mfantseman Municipal Manager of the Ghana Ambulance Service, Mr. Stephen K. Dadzie also complained that, most complaints often failed to give the needed information, they quickly hang up calls. He stressed that, every question matters in case of an emergency.
He lamented that, most road users sometimes turn a deaf ear to the horn, adding that "you're not the one to determine which vehicle should use the horn, the police service is the mandated institution, hence, pleaded to the general public to respect the honk which always signals an emergency."
